Each planter comes with an insert that to reduce the amount of soil needed and doubles up as a self irrigating system, simply water your plants and flowers and all the excess water will drain into the base of the insert where it will wait patiently until the plants require more moisture.
Should you wish to fill the entire base with soil, this is an option and there is an overflow hole (drill required) and plug to allow excess water to escape to ensure your plants or flowers do not drown.
